Inventor Brian D. Walker

Title of Invention Motorcycle/ATV Hand Warmers

Customer #90058

SPECIFICATION:

[0001] In cold weather, a motorcycle/all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rider has to wear thick gloves to keep his/her hands warm. By doing so, the rider loses manual dexterity, comfort and is limited in the range of tasks the fingers can accomplish.

[0002] The Motorcycle & ATV Hand Warmers provide a protected area for the rider’s hands to slide into thereby allowing the rider to still wear a light-weight glove or none at all and maintain full view of all controls with the digital flexibility to maneuver the controls. A Hand Warmer attaches to each of the motorcycle / ATV handle bar grips and protects the hands from wind, rain, sleet and snow.

[0003] The Hand Warmers are usually made of heavy canvas fabric on the outside with varying options for softer fabrics on the inside in order to provide different degrees of warmth. The inside shape is triangular in order to cover the hands and deflect the wind and inclement weather. Velcro strips are used to attach the Hand Warmers to the motorcycle /ATV handle bars allowing the rider to adjust the tightness of fit as needed. Looking at the Hand Warmer from the outside, the shape looks rectangular with triangular ends. One triangular end is open and has the Velcro strips used to attach the Hand Warmer. The Hand Warmer has a flexible coated wire sewn into the rectangular side which maintains the shape of the Hand Warmer but still provides the flexibility to hold the Hand Warmer on the handlebars.

[0004] Once installed on the motorcycle /ATV handlebar, the rider sees a rectangular canvas shape approximately eleven inches wide and six inches tall with an opening for the rider’s hand that is approximately eight inches deep. Looking at the side view, the rider sees a canvas

triangular shape approximately six inches tall and eight inches wide. The wind is deflected over and under the rider’s hand when inside the Hand Warmer.

[0005] The Hand Warmers are easy to put on and take off of the handlebars. They are lightweight and compact for easy storage. Outside and inside fabrics can be customized to provide different levels of warmth and custom logos and images can be applied.

I want to talk about very important thing : how to ride a motorcycle on a hill or slope.

Do you want to learn how to stop and take off on a hill or slope?

I have some tips for you!

Even a small motorcycle is hard to hold from rolling backwards, it is almost impossible to hold the motorcycle from rolling

backwards with your body.

I can think of four different ways to hold the motorcycle from rolling backwards while sitting on it.

1.Front brake

2. back brake

3. clutch

4. throttle

This is hard to learn and almost as hard to explain, most of the time a person will use two or more of these at the same time. You may want to start learning this on pavement and then try it a few times in the gravel or dirt.

What you want to do is get your motorcycle on a small slope.

First using only the front brake let the motorcycle roll backwards and then pull the front brake to stop. This can be done without having the motorcycle running if you like.

After doing this a few times you should get the feel of how the front brake will stop and hold the motorcycle from rolling backwards.

Now try the same thing using the foot brake. Taking off on a slope can be very scary for many people, what you have to learn is to use the front brake/foot brake, clutch, and throttle at the same time or should I say in a very quick order. Let me explain this:

You have already came to a stop on a slope, your holding the motorcycle from rolling backwards with either the hand brake or foot brake, your ready to take off so you will let out on the clutch very slow and you will feel the clutch start to take hold, when the clutch starts to take hold stop letting out on the clutch for a few seconds and release the front brake which will allow your hand to grab and start turning the throttle. This is called slipping the clutch, and some people may say it is not good on the clutch. Most motorcycles have a wet clutch in them and the little you do this will not cause any damage. You can practice stopping the motorcycle from rolling backwards with the clutch just like you did with the front brake.

Another thing to learn that helps doing all this is to use just one or two fingers to pull the brake lever, I’ll hold the front brake lever with two fingers and this allows me to still grip the throttle with my thumb and the other two fingers. I can roll the throttle and still have the front brake applied a little. This takes some practice but is well worth the time to learn b/4 get on the road.

This is just few tips for how to ride a motorcycle on a hill or slope. Visit here for more tips.

I was thinking I would hop on my Harley ride a short 15 minute and have some fun at a party. I was looking forward to a couple drinks and visit with friends. I never did make to the party. I just got on the freeway and b/4 I saw the car I heard the noise from her car hitting me. I had looked over my shoulder to see if I could move into the left lane and this old lady decide not to change her lane and came into the crash bar of my motorcycle. Next thing I knew I was laying on my back on the freeway. All I could think about was that the weekend b/4 this I was at a bike event and a women crashed her motorcycle, she got up from the crash and was doing fine when a car came along and killed her. So a few seconds that I was laying on my back as 4 lanes of car are cursing by I decide this was not the place to be, I started to get up and found that my foot was so damaged that I could not walk, so as I am falling back down I catch the front bumper of the ford bronco that is about to hit me. I look up at the driver of the bronco and she is screaming, the passenger of the bronco got out and helped me off the side of the road by stopping other traffic. They strapped to a back board and hauled my butt to the hospital, fared pretty go because I think I was going at least 60 mph.

I was pretty shocked at time of the crash, I couldn’t figure out how this had happen and it took me a couple days to replay everything back thru my head a dozen times. One advantage of riding a big bike is it adds protection to the rider and my 2003 ultra classic did just this for me. It took a little over $18000.00 to fix it, they had to put a new frame in it, I ended up bruised from the hips down, one finger broken or dislocated (never did get it x-rayed) and one foot that was really sore for a few days. I had scratches in the top of my helmet that meant I did a head stand after I took the windshield off with my legs; I remember flopping around on the pavement like a rag doll. I also think it was good that I never saw the car hitting me. I think when a person see the vehicle coming at them and knows their about to get hit this person will tense up (tighten up the muscle’s) and this will cause more injuries to one’s body. Like I said I flopped around on the highway like a rag doll because it happen so fast and I never saw it coming and after replaying it through my mind I figured out that the old woman that hit me figured she did nothing wrong because she said she had been hit from behind. Yup! That’s what she told the officer on the scene, and guess who got the ticket, you guess right, me.

While I was lying in the hospital waiting for x-rays to come back on my foot an Officer came to ask me what had caused the accident, I am lying there in shock trying to figure this out myself. I remember him telling me that he was going to ticket me for improper lane change or traveling too fast for condition.

It took me a couple weeks to really figure out what happened I had to go back to the spot where it happened many times. The state had been doing some road repairs in this area and had removed the white dashes and added new ones to shift all traffic over one lane, and the spot where I was hit was where the traffic should shift back. All I can figure out is this old woman never shifted back and that’s how she came into my lane. Because I was looking left to change lanes myself I never saw her and when I was lying on the side of the road I could see her car sitting on the other side, I remember thinking where did that car come from. To this day this has been the worst crash I have ever been in on a motorcycle; I ride through this same spot many times a year.

When my father found out what happened he ask me “haven’t you had enough of that motorcycle riding yet”, I just smiled and said: No: Ride hard, ride fast, be safe.

The last year of making Knuckle Warmers have taught me a lot. What worked for me may or may not have worked for others. What I do have is a very good basic design and this basic design I have can be modified to many other motorcycles besides Harley Davidson.

Here is a list of other products that I know of that offers either some protection for the hands, or offers a way to keep your hands warm. Hippo-Hands, Winterhands, Gerbings Heated Gloves, Heated grips, Thick winter riding gloves.

From what I have read and learned about Hippo-hands & Winterhands. They are very good products. What I did not like about these products was: they block the view of the controls, they are big and you have to install brackets to keep the wind from pushing them back against the brake and clutch, to big and making them hard to carry on the motorcycle when they are not needed. I think they are ugly and really don’t go with the design of a motorcycle.

Gerbings Heated Gloves & thick winter gloves: First, anything heated one has to install controls or wires to the motorcycle. And then this leaves the question of where to install the control, not a lot of option’s on some bikes. A lot of people can do this themselves but a lot can’t, plus the cost of all this on top of the price of the gloves or grips. All the heated gloves I tried didn’t fit my hands and made my hands so bulky that when riding my hands would cramp, and the same with a thick winter glove that really didn’t keep my hand warm.

Heated grips: What I have heard about heated grips sound good other then the fact that they provide very little protection for your hand. They provide heat for the palm of your hand but I have heard that the top of your hand still gets cold. I would like to try a heated grip under a Knuckle Warmer, I think this would provide the protection from wind and rain, plus keep the hand warm. I know police officer’s that have heated grips under their “Winterhands” and have heard that it’s great.

I look forward to hearing about your experience with the Knuckle Warmer, if you have any questions please feel free to contact us through contact me page.

Hello and welcome to Knuckle Warmers .com!

If your like me and have a hard time keeping your hands warm (don’t usually hot hands) then this is going to be a good investment for you. I could never keep my hands warm on a motorcycle and I was looking for good pair of hand warmers or grabber warmers, something that could fit my Harley handlebars. Well I did have a pair of Gerbing’s heated gloves that kept my hands warm, but they didn’t fit my hands and were too bulky and after using them for 2 months the thumbs melted. And the other reason I didn’t like heavy motorcycle gloves was, it made my hands cramp up or it made my fingers so big I could not hit the correct controls on my Harley handlebars.

The reason I like this design was I could still see all the controls around the motorcycle handlebar grips. Your hands appear as in the pocket, but yet you can see your fingers and controls and motorcycle clutch. I like wearing summer pair gloves all year around and I like the feeling of my motorcycle grips. I started using the Knuckle Warmers and found it very affective. I like to ride with a light pair of leather motorcycle gloves, so when it started getting cold I would install the Knuckle Warmer’s on the handlebars of the motorcycle instead of putting on a heaver pair of winter gloves, thus not changing the comfort of riding with a light leather glove.

What are the other benefits of using this motorcycle hand warmers? Here is what I like and others have told me they like about the Knuckle Warmers :

Wind and rain protection for rider’s hands

It’ simple, no wires or controls to hook to a motorcycle, could be use on different motorcycles,

It’s easy and fast to install,

It is easy to store along with other motorcycle gear,

The rider can still see all the controls on the motorcycle handlebars,

Can get custom designs,

The price.

If your reading this and don’t have a pair of Knuckle Warmers yet, let me suggest this, the protection the Knuckle Warmers provides is designed to keep the ” Extreme weather” off your hands. So your hand may still feel the temperature change but will stay with-in a comfort zone for long periods of time.
